Evil Genius: The True Story of America’s Most Diabolical Bank Heist

Updated: 5 days ago

(available of Netflix)

FTC Rating: 4 out of 5

A pizza delivery man walks into a bank in Erie, Pennsylvania armed with a cane gun. He slips the teller a nine-page note with instructions and calmly leaves the bank with the contents of the cash drawers. Pursued by police, Brian Wells surrenders but the officers soon discover that there is more to this bank heist than meets the eye. This truly strange four-part true crime series centers around suspect Marjorie Dielh-Armstrong; a brilliant, evil, mentally unstable woman and the men which gravitated towards her.

Strengths:

-Interviews with various levels of law enforcement

-Details the backgrounds and early life of Marjorie and long-time friend/accomplice, Bill Rothstein

-Narrator gains Marjorie’s trust so he has inside access to her. The personal letters and audio recordings between them feature heavily in the docuseries

Weakness:

-The filmmaking can be amateurish and rough times
